It was blustery and empty on North Fistral Beach a week or so ago. The RNLI lifeguard station was locked and the cafe desolate .... the surfboards stowed and the tables bare. The winter light was milky with sea mist, the atmosphere strangely soft and flat. And though there were few of us to see it, Newquay's iconic beach once again evoked its beautiful magic.
