My Cornwall - Fistral Beach High Tide

The name Fistral, (first recorded in 1813), comes from the Cornish word for 'foul water', ('bystel'). On this day, Fistral's golden sand had all but disappeared under a gorgeous seablue and aqua high tide, the water looked stunning. A walk along Cornwall's premier surf beach has never failed to revitalize and inspire me ... nothing 'foul' to report today .... thankfully ....

My Cornwall - Camel Estuary Winter

I've been busy in my studio.  I'm working from these old snapshots of the Camel Estuary near Padstow in Cornwall, where I used to live.  I took them in the days before digital, (.... seems like so long ago!), and I've returned to them time and again for inspiration.  I love the dove grey skies and soft salt-laden light, the very colours of winter.

My Cornwall - Fistral Beach blues

It was blustery and empty on North Fistral Beach a week or so ago.  The RNLI lifeguard station was locked and the cafe desolate .... the surfboards stowed and the tables bare.  The winter light was milky with sea mist, the atmosphere strangely soft and flat.  And though there were few of us to see it, Newquay's iconic beach once again evoked its beautiful magic.

My Cornwall - Watergate Bay in December

Watergate Bay in Cornwall, is on the Atlantic Coast about 3 miles north of Newquay.  Taking the old coastal route towards Padstow, the narrow road travels over the tops of dramatic cliffs, (an area protected by the National Trust), then plunges down in winding hair-pin turns to the bay.  In the winter twilight, its big skies and vast ocean vistas calm and rejuvenate the soul ...

My Cornwall - Wild about Constantine Bay

Images of Constantine Bay on a wild and exhilarating October day.  From Newquay, (my old home), it's a short drive along the rugged north coast of Cornwall to this curved bay hidden by sand dunes.  A wondrous bay, reminiscent of a story book picture, it evokes memories of my childhood, and somehow encapsulates all the things I love so much about Cornwall.  It feels remote yet familiar, and still bestows unexpected surprises, such as the tiny coastal coffee van, riveting surfer spectacles and shimmering goose barnacles clinging on to a huge washed up log.

My Cornwall - Surf Art's Up (at Fistral Surf Co.)

I was delighted when old friends in Newquay invited me to share their funky new surf store and exhibit my artwork.  Fistral Surf Co. is a huge light space with jaw-dropping views over the town's famous golden beaches.  My surfer paintings are presented amid quality surf gear and trendy collector's memorabilia such as 1950's vending machines and cafe signs.  I spent time chilling out on one of their comfy retro sofas enjoying coffee and the ocean vibes .... so, if you find yourself in Newquay this summer, please visit us .... browse, relax and be inspired ....
