My Côtes d'Armor - Douron Estuary Walk

Taking the coastal route east from my home in Plestin-les-Greves in Brittany, I follow the banks of the beautiful Douron estuary.  The road is lined with tall, blue green cypress pines - it's a dappled oasis with sea glimpses beyond.  I'm always tempted to park-up, and wander through the trees, especially on a balmy, August afternoon.  Hidden behind branches, I can watch small figures dotted against sand and sea .... and smile at the joy of others also enjoying this wonderful day.

My Côtes d'Armor - La Grève Blanche in Trégastel

This week, I was amazed to discover a stunning beach not far from where I live.  La Grève Blanche in Trégastel, near Lannion on the north coast of Brittany.  True to its name, an arc of dazzling fine white sand glows .... whilst Caribbean style turquoise water breaks seductively over it.  The white sand is a strange and beautiful contrast to the sculptural, wind-eroded, pink granite islands emerging from the shallow water.  This is the beginning of the famous Côte de Granite Rose, which I've written about here and here.

My Côtes d'Armor - Port Blanc and Plougrescant

Honestly, Brittany is just like a picture postcard!  From where I live, heading east along the Cote d'Armor coast, you'll discover Port Blanc - a gorgeous region of white sandy bays, tall pine trees and craggy rocks.  Grand stone manoirs and traditional Breton cottages look out over the clear water to numerous islands which run along the horizon.  Continuing east you'll reach the Plougrescant Peninsula where the enchanting 'house-between-the-rocks', (Castel-Maur), was built in 1860.

My Côtes d'Armor - No rock left unturned

They said 'Awesome', (the younger ones), and, 'I've never seen anything like it' , camera's pointing and clicking.

My friends from New Zealand arrived on a perfect day, the very best day out of the many rainy, not so nice days, that we've had this month.  Both the sun, and the moon, came out to play.  The pink rocks glittered against the cold, crisp, brilliant blue sky and the low sun made inky shadows.  We were on the famous Côte de Granite Rose, exploring the rocky mayhem of Ploumanac'h, (near where I live), in Bretagne .....

My Côtes d'Armor - Ploumanac'h Pink

Maybe it's because I'm a painter .... that I'm forever drawn to the pink rock mayhem of tumbling boulders, (reminiscent of Henry Moore natural sculptures).  Or perhaps it's the fairy tale pink lighthouse which beguiles me.  These photos were taken near the village of Ploumanac'h where you can join the coastal path at la plage de Saint-Guirec, with its distinctive Château de Costaérès on the horizon, another fairy tale rockpile!  Along this section of the Côte de Granit Rose, the 'landes et rochers' are protected within a sympathetically designed national park.
